Pre-selection

Applicant must play (1) and (2). Total playing time of (1) and (2) should be no more than 15 minutes and the playing order can be decided by the applicant.

(1) One piece from Chopin: Etude Op.10 or Op.25

(2) Piece(s) of free choice

※ Pieces by F. Chopin:Etude Op.10 and Op.25 cannot be included.


<Note>
When applicants submit video data for Pre-selection (Overseas), the following instructions must be observed.

1)
The performance data should be newly recorded for the 5th Shigeru Kawai International Piano Competition on or after August 2, 2024.
2)
All the pieces should be recorded on the same day at the same venue continuously without stopping camera.
3)
Angle of camera should be fixed and applicant’s face and hands must be visible clearly at the same time.
4)
Pieces not in the repertoire list must not be recorded.
5)
The video should not be edited, or split into two or more parts.
6)
Video should be uploaded to YouTube (Unlisted) or online storage as one file.
7)
File format of the video should be MP4 or MOV.

1st Round

Competitor must play (1) and (2). Total playing time of (1) and (2) should be no more than 20 minutes and the playing order can be decided by the competitor.

One of the following ①~④.

  • ① One piece from F. Schubert:4 impromptus Op.90/D899 or Op.142/D925, or piece(s) from F. Schubert : Moments musicaux Op.94/D780
  • ② One piece from F. Chopin : Nocturne
  • ③ Piece(s) from F. Mendelssohn:Lieder ohne Worte Book 1 - Book 8
  • ④ Select one opus from the followings and play one or several pieces.
     J. Brahms:Op.76, Op.116, Op.117, Op.118, or Op.119

(2) Piece(s) of free choice

Pieces played at the Pre-selection cannot be included.

Semifinal Round

Competitor must play (1) and (2). Total playing time of (1) and (2) should be from 30 to 40 minutes and the playing order can be decided by the competitor.

※Piece(s) played at the Pre-selection can be included, but piece(s) played at the 1st Round cannot be included.

(1) One sonata (all movements) or one variations by F.J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart or L.v. Beethoven

(2) Piece(s) of free choice

Final Round

Competitor must choose one piano concerto from the followings and play with an accompanist the Secretariat will designate. Concerto will be performed on two pianos.

Notes about All Repertoire

  • ・All the pieces should be played from memory.
  • ・All the pieces from Pre-selection to the Final Round should be submitted upon application.
    Composer, title, key, opus number, movement(s), and playing time should be stated in the application form correctly.
  • ・Submitted repertoire can be changed by the following date on "My Page". Any changes after these dates cannot be accepted.
    Pre-selection:January 15, 2025
    1st Round - Final Round : April 20, 2025
  • Total Playing time is measured from the first note to the end of the last note, including the time between the pieces. When the playing time exceeds the specified time limit, a responsible person (the Jury) may interrupt the performance.
  • ・Excerpt(s) from Sonata or Suite can be selected for the Piece(s) of free choice. In this case, it should be described correctly in the application form.
  • ・All the repetitions are at the competitor's discretion.
  • ・Submission of music score of played piece may be required.
